Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the dramaturgical model of Erving Goffman, the most influential sociologist of 20th century. The dramaturgical model is analyzed in the context of contemporary social conditions and the key subject of this analysis is the possibility of its application in virtual communication. In the first part of the paper, we present the dramaturgic model of face-to-face interaction and analyze the need for this sort of interaction, networking and formation of communities in the virtual world. Special attention is focused on the presentation of individuals in social networks sites and their interaction with virtual friends through the prism of Goffman’s conceptualization of presentation of individuals in everyday life. Hidden behind their computers and avatars, protagonists of virtual communication have the possibility to position themselves as it pleases them, and to, as Goffman’s actor, chose their roles. The simulation of identity in virtual world presents one of the most interesting phenomenon today, ranging from completely false presentation, on one side, to the management of impressions and reputation in creating the image based on real identity, on the other side. In such environment, playing a certain role can be simpler in the short run, but in long run the skill of managing impressions “online” requires exquisite “acting” talent.
