Summary/Abstract: Privatization is one of the key steps within the process of transition. This is one of the main reasons why it is necessary analyzing this problem separately. There are numerous studies of transition and privatization. Scholars of different fields analyzed this problem trying to reach to its essence. This paper analyzes social and economic aspects of privatization and it is divided in two parts. The first part discusses about the influence of privatization in transition countries, while the second part examines the problems and consequences of privatization in Serbia. Considering the fact that process of privatization faces numerous challenges the subject of our research is very important for its understanding. The most scholars believe that one of the main reasons for the failure of privatization in Serbia is The Law on Privatization. A new law on privatization was adopted in 2001 and its basic principles are creating the conditions for economic development and social stability, public security, flexibility and forming of selling price according to market conditions. This law also defines model of the actual privatization in Republic of Serbia. This model is sales of capital and capital transfer without compensation. The most worrying thing is that citizens in Serbia believe that privatization is largely associated with corruption. The process of selection of the most successful model of privatization is not easy and it depends of many factors. We also underline the fact that one universal strategy of privatization cannot be applied in all society.
