Summary/Abstract: Laura Mulvey’s essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” (1975) deals with the objectifying power of the male gaze or scopophilia, the pleasure derived from viewing another in a sexual way. This paper applies this concept to Thomas Hardy’s novel “Far from the Madding Crowd” (1874). Throughout the novel, Bathsheba Everdene is exposed to the penetrative male gaze, as she is strongly imbued with the “to-be-looked-at-ness” effect.
