Summary/Abstract: The subject of this paper is the cultural determination of language and linguistic activity. The author distinguishes between two types of cultural determination of language activity: ontological/essential and epistemic/factual. Therefore, all language facts (formal, functional, combinatorial, etymological et al.) are treated as symptomatic or symbolic phenomena. The author analyzes the phenomena of both types on the example of European languages. The data included by the author suggests that the language activity is complementary in relation to culture because the part of the category of culture is realized in the different forms outside of the language activity.
