Summary/Abstract: Up to 1950 Dolni Roven was the symbol of Czech agrarian prosperity. Endowed with good quality soil, the village saw unprecedented development, enhanced political skills and economic proficiency of the Udrzal family. It has its own monograph written by the rural sociologist Karel Galla. The communist takeover and the resulting destruction of large private landholding turned Dolni Roven into an average village looking to the nearby Pardubice for inspiration and wealth. The demise of communism has reduced the village to economic oblivion. But people continue living there. Soon Dolni Roven will become part of the European Union. What kind of future is there for village communities such as Dolni Roven? This paper will discuss preliminary observations from a new three-year research project of a re-study of Dolni Roven. The division of topics in the 1939 monograph by K.Galla will be compared with questions to be examined in 2002. New fieldwork methods will be also dealt with. Can we consider Dolni Roven representative of Czech or Central European villages after the fall of communism?
