Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the modes of expressing ethnic affiliation and personal identity through culture. The observations are made within a research project concerning the Bulgarian community in Slovakia. The double cultural competence of “the second” generation of Bulgarians born in Bulgarian families on Slovak land who live in foreign ethnic setting is discussed in the paper. The Bulgarian cultural pattern is presented as a heritage from the family and as an acquired property during personal development.
