Summary/Abstract: The features specific to the spoken language hold a particularly prominent place in Krleža’s early works: Ratna lirika, Legende, Simfonije and Hrvatski bog Mars. This is manifested by numerous repetitions, especially double ones, because they clearly emphasise the expressive value of the spoken language. The discussed texts belong mainly to the expressionist phase of Krleža’s opus. The scream, being the most powerful spoken utterance, is the principal stylistic feature of these works. Double repetitions provide micro-technique that reveals the power and artistic value of the scream. Since in concatenation or repetition strong linguistic (i.e. syntactic) structures do not exist, the expressive features of the spoken language gain momentum concurrent with the dissemination of syntactic features.
