Summary/Abstract: In this paper we provide a general, thorough presentation about the innovative topic of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). These are contracts according to which the beneficiary of an Ecosystem Service (ES) is willing to pay the provider of the ES itself for convincing him not to pollute/destroy it. We shall present all the main issues related with the design of a proper, successful PES scheme. From the theoretical point of view, we shall illustrate the links between PES and public economics theory, as well as all the formal requirements discussed in relevant scientific literature. From the practical point of view, we shall refer to outstanding examples, in different contexts, to highlight how PES, being tailored to place-based conditions, may result crucial for environment conservation.
