Summary/Abstract: The problem of universals is one of fundamental meaning for phislosophy. A great part of the history of European philosophy could be considered as a series of different conceptions of universals. Originating from the ancient notions of universal as an element (water, air, fire...), passing through the comprehensive ontological works of Plato and Aristotle and later through the views of nominalism and realism, the problem of universals reaches its specific interpretations in Modern Philosophy. Universal is being grasped here in different metaphysical structures: Descartes’ lumen naturale, Locke’s tabula rasa, Hume’s human nature, Berkeley’s esse est percipi) could be considered precisely as such conceptualizations. The concept of function as juxtaposition of unity and multitude is of prime importance in comprehension of the Modern Philosophy interpretive horizon in approaching the universal. This concept in its turn draws attention to the specific formalism of the Modern Philosophy which in a sense proves to be crucial for the European scientific and transcendental position.
