Summary/Abstract: The article compares the presentation of the verbs murdyti(s), murgdyti(s), murkdyti(s) ‘dip (into), plunge (into)’ in different dictionaries of Lithuanian, namely, six editions of the Dictionary of Contemporary Lithuanian (Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos žodynas) and two editions of the Dictionary of Lithuanian (Lietuvių kalbos žodynas), which have been released both in the print and electronic versions, analyzes the current usage of the verbs, their interrelation and semantics. The analysis of frequency in the contemporary Lithuanian language and semanticanalysis of the verbs call for a new treatment of these verbs and their derivatives in the Dictionary of Standard Lithuanian.Attempts to accomodate the requirement of norm stability and the criterion of variable language use encouraged the application of differentiated approach to the inclusion of cross-references. Yet this approach has certain drawbacks as it fails to accurately reveal the semantics of variants with the root murg-. Hopefully, this article will stimulate a discussion among lexicographers, lexicologists, language norm prescribers and other experts and will eventually allow to improve the treatment of the above-mentioned and other verbs in the Dictionary of Standard Lithuanian.
