Summary/Abstract: Since its formation and particularly after World War II Ankara has always tied its foreign policy to that of the West. This is in spite of the fact that Turkey’s historical, cultural and geographical situation means that it has national interests to defend in the Balkans, Near and Central Asia and in the Middle East, which naturally should have pushed Ankara to follow a flexible multi-dimensional foreign policy. However, parallel to its Westernization program Ankara directed its foreign policy towards Europe since the proclamation of the Republic and this policy just speeded up after the World War Two. To this end, NATO has always played a crucial role in this policy. To understand this, one must make an assessment of the degree to which Ankara perceives its foreign policy interests to overlap with those of the West in general.
