Summary/Abstract: The article “This tone sounds bad in my ear” – Jewish issues at the forum of the Polish United Workers’ Party’s Central Committee in the “Polish year 1956” discusses the most important party meetings when the issue of Jews and Jewish culture was discussed. The Jewish question repeatedly cropped up during the party “thaw” debates, since the 6th Plenum of Polish United Workers’ Party Central Committee (March), it gradually appeared more and more in subsequent discussions (7th and 8th plenums). It was present in the internal party disputes, dealt with because of anti-Semitism, emigration to Israel, repatriation of Jews, Polish citizens from the USSR, settlements with Stalinism, another conflict in the Middle East, relations with Israel. Another issue was the so-called “Jewish street” and the actions of comrades working only “in the section”, having other problems than Polish comrades. The matter of Jews and Jewish culture was a marginal issue in discussions dominated by the important political events of 1956. However, despite the limited presence, it was treated as a separate problem, in speeches and talks it was treated independently from other significant matters. Apart from the new, “thaw” opinions on the Jewish subject, the author recalls the position of the party (Polish Workers’ Party/Polish United Workers’ Party) regarding Jews until the mid-1950s, she shows the “decrease” after the years of Stalinism. The article recalls also the attitude of Soviet comrades, including the Communist Party of the Soviet Union leader, Nikita Khrushchev, to the Jewish subject.
