Summary/Abstract: In the article an attempt is made to explain the origin of one of the most popular of Maironis (1862-1932) poems, "Lietuva brangi". With this aim in mind the author has compared the first (at that time unpublished) of Maironis' poems "Lietuva" (1888), the poem "Lietuvos graþybë" formed from selected stanzas of the poem (first published in 1891 in the periodical Varpas) and the final version "Lietuva brangi" (1920; 1927). The author discusses who could have prepared the poem "Lietuva brangi" for publication in Varpas and how it could have been done. It seems doubtful that Maironis himself could have done it. In composing the poem "Lietuva brangi" in some cases Maironis pays more attention to the text of "Lietuva", in other cases to the text of "Lietuvos graþybë", and in still other cases to both of them together. The question as to who prepared for publication the poem "Lietuvos graþybë" remains unanswered, since there are no reliable data to allowing one to answer that question.
