Summary/Abstract: The unique natural resource – the West Lithuanian geothermal water anomaly - covers the territory of Klaipeda, Palanga and Šilutė municipalities. In Palanga lies the northern part of this anomaly, where the temperature of geothermal resource is slightly lower than the anomalies in the southern part of Lithuania. However, geothermal resources in Palanga resort are available; they create advantages over other resort areas in Lithuania. Geothermal water resources in Palanga are conducive to increase the competitiveness of the resort and for development of recreation and tourism activities. These resources can be used not only for new and innovative recreation and tourism product development, but also for reduction of seasonal problems. The main trends of geothermal water use for recreation and tourism development are: health promotion and wellness services, recreational entertainment and geothermal water for heating. There were analyzed the usage of geothermal water for recreation and tourism development are collected and systematized information on the geothermal water dispersion of Palanga town municipality, also the characteristics and their usability in the development of recreation and tourism services. There were clarified the operation of the geothermal water and the possibility of technical terms in the article. The aim of this article – to improve the diversity of health (rehabilitation), SPA and recreational service, as well as increase the competitiveness of Palanga resort by using geothermal water resources. The usage of natural factors in Palanga is quite narrow, confined by hydro-therapeutic procedures or mineralized with salt water usage for various procedures. There are no experience using natural mineral waters, geothermal waters, it is unclear what type of soil is applied for mud application procedures, entirely no usage examples of peaty mud baths. It becomes obvious, that there are completely untapped climate-therapy opportunities. An analysis strengths and weaknesses of the geothermal water usage for the development of recreation and tourism services showed that the geothermal mineral water (), is the most appropriate for recreation and tourism development. It lies in the lower devonian (Pernu-Ķemeriu) layer, where the water temperature (31°C) is suitable for most health services; salinity (43 g/l) is optimal for health and ancillary services; the amount of water. Since the analyzed field of activities is a relatively new in Lithuania, there is no law, so far it is not clear the status of geothermal mineral water as a recreational and tourism resource, there is not formed a formal approach to the promotion of the use of these resources and development of related services. Legal framework of Lithuania defines the importance and status of the geothermal resources, and regulates their use as a renewable resource, but it is not defined and perceived as a resource for recreation and tourism services development.
