Archaic and Historical Lexicon in Selected Narratives by Ivo Andrić

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the archaic and historical lexicon of the selected narratives (Prokleta avlija, Anikina vremena, Mara milosnica) by Ivo Andrić. First, attention is paid to the definition of archaisms and historicism. Then is observed their status in dictionaries, the way they access the lexicographers and then analyzed their usage and stylistic value in selected texts. It was found that there are some inconsistencies in determining the outdated and archaic lexicon. We tried to show that that lexemes, which are qualified as obsolete in dictionaries, possess certain stylistic effects and function in the narratives, and in this regard it is preferable to look at them as archaisms.
