Summary/Abstract: Emotions are an integral part of the reading and viewing experience; the more we know about a character’s inner thoughts, the easier we identify with them, simultaneously growing more curious about their fate. Literature and movies have a variety of techniques at their disposal with which they can explain characters’ feelings to the audience; however, both media face certain limitations, and so the question arises as to how authentic these emotions can be. This task becomes additionally intricate in the case of children’s literature and films due to the audience’s age. This paper will aim to determine how emotional scenes were handled in Otfried Preußler’s Krabat and Karel Zeman’s animated adaptation titled The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. When it comes to film adaptations, comparisons with the original are inevitable, as well as attempts to determine which is superior. In this paper, the original and the adaptation will be regarded separately, and the goal will be to explore how each utilized the techniques and tools at its disposal in order to communicate the main character’s feelings to the audience. Moreover, it will be compared how emotional scenes from the same source material were depicted differently in different media, or rather how the author and the director made use of the possibilities that language/film have to offer when tackling this task.
