Summary/Abstract: An encyclopedia article, in the form of a short monograph, giving general information on Turkish Art and Folk music. It deals with the origins, theory, rhythms and instruments of this music. According to Saygun, Turkish music is basically pentatonic. Investigates the relationship of Turkish Art music to the old Greek music and to the musical writings of medieval moslem writers. It proposes that the Turkish makams, like ancient Greek music, are formed by adjoining tetrachords. Makam tables are given based on this principle. The rythms are described by the foot movements of the Greeks, poetic meters of muslim writers and the traditional kudüm drum beatings. The musical instruments are briefly described and their tunings and ranges are given with staff notation. The structure and the functioning of Turkish Folk music is given by examples from the repertory. Frequent references are made to ancient Greek modes in explaining the structure of this music. Rhythm, Folk Dances and the Musical instruments are described.
