An Overview of the Turkish Gypsies: An Investigation on the Izmir Gypsies

Summary/Abstract: This study which aims to reflect the socioeconomic characteristics and conditions of gypsies in Turkey, has been based on the research carried out in Tarlabasi, Bernova, Izmir. Social and economical map of the research field was tried to be charted, and data were obtained concerning demographic features, place of birth, migration, marital status, number of family members, education, household and space, work and job, income and expenses, The goods used in the house, political participation and organization, as well as the gypsies point of view towards themselves and the world. Consequently, the low level of education, unemployment, poverty, and residence problem where determined as the most significant data obtained at the end of the study.
