Summary/Abstract: From the viewpoint of residential architecture Chicago is an exceptionally interesting city. Crowded New York has small flats; in sparsely populated Dallas, multi-dwelling construction is almost unknown; and Chicago is somewhere in between. It has an extremely evolved residential architecture both single- and multi-unit. A historical review of housing architecture allows us to discover under what circumstances and in what manner residential architecture in Chicago has evolved, and the influence of Mies van der Rohe on its development. Most residential structures in Chicago were built by Mies, but his significance and influence on the development of residential architecture has been virtually unexplored. A quick sight-seeing tour of the city quickly reveals that many Chicago architects adopted the concept of the façade, or merely the visual appearance of a structure, following the model of Mies's architecture. Some even emulated the whole design of Mies's residential structure.
