Summary/Abstract: Freshwater and terrestrial shells are commonly found at prehistoric sites, either as remains of consummation, used unmodified as tools, or as a raw material for the production of tools and ornaments, or as components of local biotopes. The paper presents analysis of shells of freshwater bivalves, as well terrestrial and freshwater gastropods, collected in the course of the excavation campaigns 1998–2003 at the Late Neolithic/ Early Eneolithic site Vinča – Belo brdo. The most numerous are shells of the mussel of the genus Unio. Based on morphology and proportions three species are identified: Unio crassus, U. pictorum and U. tumidus. In places,Unio shells were found in piles. It is supposed that mussels were consumed as an additional food supply.
