Summary/Abstract: The paper treats the variability of local manifestations of Trypillian B1 flint-working by the application of theoretical concepts of “modes” of lithic industry. Author defines two “modes” and suggests interpreting them in social and economic aspects as a reflection of different organisational levels in tools’ production: a single household domestic production and super-communal specialized professional flint-working. The first mode is characterised by mostly local raw material utilization. Major part of tools is done on flakes. Blades never outnumber flakes. The former are short and subprismatic. The mode I is an Early Trypillian legacy on the Trypillia B1 stage. It was preserved in particular cases of raw material abundance in the Dniester valley and it was dominant in the Southern Bug valley. The second mode is related to specialised detachment of long and regular blades from nodules of high-quality raw material. The notable part of tools was done on blades and their fragments. The knapping and retouching techniques are oriented towards production of standardized blanks suitable fora long row of transformation in a number of formal tool’s types. The mode II was completely realised in the sites of the Dniester valley. The sites of Trypillia B1 period can be treated as composed of products of the modes in different proportions. Thus, Trypillians knappeda lot on their own, for the household needs, while depending on the supply of high-quality blanks produced by specialized knappers.
