Summary/Abstract: Yamada Torajirō (1866-1957) is the most mentioned person during the activities of the “Japan Year 2010 in Turkey”. Yamada’s reason for coming to Turkey, his writings on Turkey and his impressions of Istanbul reflect Japanese view of Turkey during the 19th century. In this article, these points were taken into consideration along with discussions of Yamada’s relationship with Turkey.
