Summary/Abstract: Spicery is known as being an important ingredient for enhancing flavor in the cuisines, are also used for healing purposes. This study attempting to examine the role of spice and spice market in our daily lives approaches the issue by investigating the spice trade and the places in Antalya city center’s spicery stores (aktar). This study investigates spicery and herbs in relation to the places where they are traded in the city center of Antalya. After an introduction of the trade and usage of spices and herbs throughout history; the structure of contemporary trade, the reasons for the interest in them, the differentiation within the places in relation to the customers they aim to sell their products (Local and Touristic Stores) are covered. Touristic and local spicery stores are differentiated from each other related to their reason for existence, and with regards to issues like customer profiles, the goods, their space arrangements and so forth. Touristic spicery stores can be argued in the tourism potential of Antalya. The goods on sale are mainly spices and souvenirs, and the space was arranged and designed in an appropriate way to display their goods. On the other hand the local spicery stores came to display a range of goods including spice, herbs and special herb-oils, especially with the rise of migration from the Eastern regions of the country where the spice plays an important role in the local cuisines, and the rise of the interest in the alternative medicine
