Summary/Abstract: Notwithstanding that the phenomena of identity together with the fact as old as humanity, the rise of the concept is relatively new in the field of social sciences. The phenomena of identity which is formed as a result of fortuitous in the lifelong process is both natural process and political building. It embodies traces of the past together with social, cultural and economic relations, was defined and built in different ways in each period of time. Particularly, the identity building in the nation- state which emerged as a result of a product of modernity has gained importance. Since the modern nation-state system that has a natural tendency to maintain and protect its own existence in its proper aims to build an individual for himself. Therefore, all social identities melted in the pot of citizenship, the reflection of sub-identities such as gender, ethnicity and race have being limited to the public sphere . However, postmodernism which constitutes the philosophical basis of globalization has to question identity, class, nation as a result of homogeneity by emphasizing the partiality against universality. Today, the nation-state is pushed the building of a new structure and the community which legalize itself according to the cyclical requirements imposed by globalization begins the adjustment in itself. The search for new identities and the issue of coexistence of different identities gained importance in 21st century. This study includes analysis of the course of identities in the historical process aims to reveal the changes and transformation of identity from the time of modernity up to the present times. For this purpose, to clarify the definition of identity, the elements / components of identities, building of identity and issues related to sustainability are the focus of this study
