Summary/Abstract: In the last two decades, a consistent literature has been published on school engagement. Several studies concerning the contribution that individual characteristics have in explaining differences between adolescents in school domain suggest that girls tend to report higher levels of engagement. This article summarizes the results of a comparative study which aimed to explore gender differences in school engagement of Romanian adolescents. Participants included 1168 high school students (772 girls and 396 boys) from six educational institutions located in Moldova (Romania). There were 9th (N = 309), 10th (N = 496), 11th (N = 317), and 12th (N = 46) graders.Participants completed several standardized questionnaires, as part of a research project on antecedents and outcomes of school engagement among adolescents. School engagement was measured using the Student Engagement in School – Four- Dimensional Scale. Compared to boys, girls reported signiicantly higher cognitive (d = 0,40), behavioral (d = 0,41), and total engagement (d = 0,30). When analyses were performed separately at each grade level, signiicant differences in cognitive and behavioral engagement also emerged, with some luctuations in effect size. The findings from this study enhance the understanding about the role that adolescents’ gender plays in obtaining academic performance.
