Summary/Abstract: One of the prevalent characteristics of contemporary mobile payments market are the low barriers of entry. This leads to the fragmentation and abundance of new market entrants. The competitors are forced to build two sides of the market simultanously – acquiring merchants and payees. The speed of growth and the ability to take advantage of the network effects is crucial for surviving. Interoperability allows to speed up this proces by pooling the user base of competing payment systems and building up the scale of operations. The article discusses the models of interoperability in the mobile payment systems, both internationally and on the Polish market. The results of the preliminary survey of Polish m-payment operators are presented, pointing to the most important factors determining decisions of scheme operators relating to interoperability initiatives.
