Summary/Abstract: Smart specialization is a new idea of the European Union aimed at innovative development of regions. Smart specialisation is on the one hand the concept of building an innovation strategy for regions and countries, on the other hand, a tool for countries or regions to create innovation strategy. Smart specialisation strategies use the strengths of the region, competitive advantages and existing resources to achieve competitive advantage in the field. Using the potential of the region, resources and entities on the functioning and support for them may be important determinants of the development of enterprises, especially small and medium ones, which are generally strongly related to the local environment. The aim of the article was to analyze the theoretical assumptions and the concept of smart specialisation and the impact of its implementation on the development of the SME sector in the regions. There were presented concepts and economic theories underlying the smart specialization, a process to choose the smart specialization in the Polish provinces and there were made attempts to assess the impact of the implementation of smart specialisation on SME development. Methods of analysis and criticism of literature and strategic documents as well as the analysis and logical construction were used.
