Summary/Abstract: In article the author tries to present trends in terms of changing the management model in higher education. Based on the analysis of polish universities strategic documents, as well as on the basis of literature on the subject, the author attempts to describe the process of change taking place in this area. Author used a processual approach in analyzing of organization, based largely on Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems. From this perspective, universities development strategies are interpreted as a form of adaptation to changing political, socio-economic and demographic context. The author also used Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social fields in order to describe the emerging complex relationships of domination and subordination, as a consequence of changes in the context of the functioning of Polish universities. In order to expose the center-periphery relations that are taking place in the emerging new field of higher education author used Immanuel Wallerstein’s world-system theory.
