The Life of the Holy Empress Theophano in Cyrillic Manuscripts from the Balkans: Archaeographical Notes on the Preserved Slavic Copies

Summary/Abstract: St. Theophano, the first wife of the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI (866–912), is a good example illustrating the fact that the cult of saints follows the route of their relics. Hagiographic and hymnographic works about her appear in medieval South-Slavic literatures after a part of her saintly remains were translated to Tărnovo and from there were later moved to other capitals in the region – Vidin, Kruševac and Belgrade. The Life of St. Theophano, attributed to a “Nicholas, Deacon of the Great Church of St. Lazaros, Bishop of Drynopolis”, is not known in its Greek original. Yet, in several Bulgarian, Serbian and Moldavian MSS dating from the end of the 14th to the beginning of the 16th centuries it is preserved in two separate versions (most likely representing two independent translations). Most of these codices were written and compiled by well-known and well-educated menof-letters and there is no doubt that the Life belonged to the high-level literature of the epoch. The article discusses the archeographical information about the MSS where the text is present as a preliminary step towards its critical edition and further study.
