Summary/Abstract: This research paper elaborates on a complex use of irony in the fiction of Jovan Grčić Milenko in a “European framework”. The interpretation of Grčić’stwo narratives (“U gostionici kod ’Polu zvezde’ na imendan šantavog torbara” and “Sremska ruža”) traces the phenomena of permanent parabasis and ironics uspension. Grčić’s unfinished stories, written at the end of 19th century, stand at the border point between two grand perspectives on literature: Romanticism and Realism. Both poetic practices are given in a vibrant dialogue, complementary and productively coexisting. Grčić’s texts represent an effective intersection of European romantic and realistic literature and the domestic literary tradition, using the forms of romantic irony, Gogolian tonalities (laughing and sobbing at the same time), speech acts in doubling distances, lyrical passages woven into a narrative tissue and folklore tradition. Ironic discourse in Grčić’s narratives is a dominant factor of deconstruction. Ironic plots and sudden, unexpected diegeticturns are recognized as romantic literary devices used to achieve effects of estrangement within the epistemology of literary theory.
