Pre-imperial Res Gestae of Probus, or the Career of the Ideal Princeps in Historia Augusta

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine how Historia Augusta presents Probus’ earlycareer. Its author uses typical motifs and semantic structures to show that Probuswas an ideal candidate for the ideal princeps. His personage is modelled accordingto the patterns of the heroes of old and he fights, sometimes in person, in severalcampaigns against the barbarians.
