The Italian Dedications of Pedro de Cieza de León’s The First Part of the Chronicle of Peru

Summary/Abstract: In this work we introduce a study about the dedications presented in the Italian sixteenth century translations of Pedro de Cieza de León’s First Part of The Chronicle of Peru, written in 1553. The first Italian edition was published in Rome in 1555, by Fratelli Dorici. Then followed many more Italian editions, all of them in Venice, by Andrea Arrivabene in 1556, Giordano Ziletti in 1557, who reprinted that of 1557 in 1560. In this same year The First Part was also published by Pietro Bosello and Francesco Lorenzini da Turino. The last Italian edition of the 16th century was printed by Camillo Franceschini in 1576. In these editions we find two different dedications, one for Cardinal Saracino (1555, 1560, 1576), and one for Alessandro Contarini (1556 and 1557).The first dedication presents a language with clear elements of the Roman dialect that was changed in the Venetian editions. The first part of the work presents a huge range of samples about the changes between the Dorici’s edition and the Arrivabene’s one (with very little changes between Arrivabene and the other Venetian editors). These changes refer to consonantism, vocalism, the dichotomy in the use of the articles li and i, the separation of the words. Some other changes concern secondary aspects, in terms of frequency but not as far as their importance in concerned, like gender and number, substitution by synonyms, use of personal pronouns and the final elision, omissions and addends, and variation in the verbal morphology.The second part of this work analyzes the other dedication, to Alessandro Contarini, a member of one of the most important Venetian families. In this dedication the focus is on the way to satisfy the human curiosity of knowledge of the world, especially of new far worlds.The conclusions shed light, on one hand, on the relations between the editions with the dedication to Cardinal Saracino, and, on the other hand, on the two ones with the second dedication.
