Summary/Abstract: The development of archival service in Bosnia and Herzegovina, started quite late, just after the Second World War, the establishment of the first archival institutions. This had an impact on the overall achievements of archival activities, are seen through the segment of archival institutions and their results in terms of protection, treatment and use of archive materials. These results can be viewed through three different periods: the first since the establishment of the first archival institution until 1990, when the archival service had a rocky road, but at the end of this time reached an enviable level, viewed in the competence of archival institutions that answers all the important requirements of the archival profession . This gave significant results in terms of protection of archives in the making, fonds and collections, processing and use of the same. Significant results have been achieved in other fields, such as: publishing collections of documents and other publications, realization of numerous cultural events, establishing cooperation with educational institutions and the media and a number of other significant results. The trend of successful development of archival activities stopped the circumstances of war (1992-1995), which were detrimental to the overall activity and archives. At this time, victims are huge amounts of current records, especially those emerging. The archives have experienced stagnation in every way, which will all leave severe consequences for the overall activity. The third phase of development refers to the period after the war. This is a period of renewal of archival activities, which passed with many difficulties, resulting from the same organization on the principle of the state system. This was a significant brake on the establishment of a uniform system. On repair the consequences of war and reconstruction activity was influenced by numerous factors, such as low-status activity, lack of support for founders, lack of adequate staff, poor working conditions, the unequal status of archival institutions and others. But, nevertheless, there have been positive steps forward, especially in some archival institutions that have struggled to catch up with the contemporary archival knowledge as a result of the great sacrifice, perseverance and professional work but it was not enough to establish a valid system, in order to meet the demands of time and profession.
