Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show how class and gender as socially constructed categories can be deconstructed by a subversive act which longs to undermine the system of dychotomies of patriarchal society. The dystopian novel entitled The Eye of the Heron by Ursula Le Giun, is used as a literary example to show the strategies by which the subordinated class and a woman as a marginalized member of society are attempting to violate the structure of the patriarchal paradigm. Capitalistic patriarchal society which exploits and opressess the working class at the planet Victoria and enslaves the women is in the focus of Le Guin’s critical perspective. By annihilating the oppositions, at least momentarily, through revolutionary outbreaks of the marginal, Le Guin is building a path towards a heterogenous society where oppositions are of no significance. This paper is trying to put emphasis on this aspect of Le Guin’s work which offers a deeply humanistic vision. Consequently, in order to analyse and clarify the issue of class and gender, as well as their underlying ideologies and to indicate prospective areas of the unrestricted activity of the marginal, this paper relies substantially on theorists Terry Eagleton, Frederic Jameson as well as the feminist Judith Butler.
