Summary/Abstract: The latest book by R. Darnton is devoted to censorship. The intention of the author was to show how, in selected countries with authoritarian political systems and at various times, the control of the printed word was executed. Comparative analysis was used to compare the functioning of censorship in the following countries: Bourbon France in the 18th century, British India in the 19th century and the German Democratic Republic in the second half of the 20th century. Each of these cases is different, but we can find there are many similarities.
