Summary/Abstract: E. H. Gombrich’s famous book Art and Illusion argued that while the practice of art within the Western naturalist tradition was thoroughly impregnated by the use of pictorial conventions, its artists made real discoveries about the nature and the simulation of the appearance of the natural world. His work has led to debates over the respective roles of nature and convention in responses to that imagery. In the background he has, from time to time, reflected on the relationship between nature and culture and this paper is intended to draw attention to these reflections.
