Summary/Abstract: This article is about the artistic side of movies and it tries to understand the nature of the art of film. It aims to define goals of film makers and to see at which point film becomes art. Through comparisons with other arts (such as painting, sculpture, architecture, theater etc.) this article establishes advantages and disadvantages of movies when put up against some of these more traditional arts. It also determines the limitations of film. Some big names of movie history are mentioned here and some of their thoughts and theories are used as help in achieving the goals of this article. A lot of effort is invested in the search for the true artistic soul of cinematography. This article also tries to see which elements film has at its disposal. Overall, the conclusion is that film can definitely be counted among the arts and even be called the “the most encompassing art”. It also aims to see if it is possible to somehow solve the stagnation of modern film and its artistic decadence.
