The main trends and directions of research on women’s entrepreneurship

Summary/Abstract: Research objective: The aim of the article is to present, discuss and systematize the main trends and directions of studies on women’s entrepreneurship (epistemological objective) and to discuss current statistics on trends and the state of women’s entrepreneurship in the European Union, with particular emphasis on Poland. The research problem and methods: The article deals with an important and topical area of research on the inclusive entrepreneurship. In the theoretical-descriptive part, a review of subject literature is conducted on the basis of Polish and English literature. The analytical part is based on secondary data. The process of argumentation: In the first part academic papers describing women’s entrepreneurship are divided into groups according to the major research problems analyzed in them. Then, an extended analysis of barriers to women’s entrepreneurship in the light of previous studies is presented. In the last part statistical data on women’s entrepreneurship in Poland and the European Union are reported and discussed. Research results: The main research directions, identified in the review of the subject literature, include: barriers to women’s entrepreneurship, women’s motivation for starting a business, support available for women’s entrepreneurship, and a comparative study of men’s and women’s entrepreneurship. Conclusions, innovations and recommendations: Further research should be directed at understanding the mechanisms governing women’s willingness to start their own business and at identifying the existing barriers.
