Summary/Abstract: Research objective: The objective of the paper is to evaluate recent experiences in training and counseling offered to innovative startups. The research problem and methods: New theoretical constructs and guidelines for the efficient creation of innovative new ventures have been developed since 2000. Their development was triggered by an observation that the majority of young entrepreneurs do not follow a sequential (process) model reflected in the methodology of a business plan. The process of argumentation: The article discusses three most recent theoretical concepts related to the decision making process connected with launching innovative startups, namely: the effectuation theory, lean startup, and born to flip. Their presentation is followed by the description of practical experiences gained while implementing the training programme based on lean startup organized on request of Smolna Entrepreneurship Center (Municipality of Warsaw) in the period between November and December 2015. Research results: Irrespective of specific methods and training techniques, in the innovation-driven economy certain entrepreneurial skills are of crucial importance, and they include, for example, establishing links with potential and existing customers and business partners, flexibility reflected in quick adaptation of the product offer to the changing demands of customers, flexible reactions to unfavorable market developments, and new opportunities and inspirations triggered by cooperation with business partners. Conclusions, innovations and recommendations: The latest theoretical developments explaining the decision making process in launching innovative startups have been successfully implemented in training and counseling offered to people launching their first startups. While the training methods used become more sophisticated, it does not mean that the classic process approach with the business plan as the core tool has lost its utility.
