Summary/Abstract: Research objective: The contemporary labor market places high demands on graduates of higher education who are looking for employment. There is a significant increase in employers’ requirements in the area of professional competence. The aim of the paper is to present selected aspects of education and development of soft skills in students and university graduates on the example of the cosmetology department. The research problem and methods: The expectations of the labor market towards graduates of higher education force universities to adopt a new approach to the development strategy and professional skills training. In addition to the requirements of knowledge, experience, and cognitive and linguistic skills, job offers specify a number of desirable personality traits and interpersonal skills of the applicant, which are called soft skills. Scientific studies indicate a dynamically growing importance of soft skills, both in the process of recruiting new employees, as well as major determinants of employment stability and continuity of careers. The article presents selected aspects of soft skills training and coaching courses organized for students and university graduates on the example of the cosmetology department. The article attempts to organize the terminology associated with this issue, and, on the basis of the specific nature of teaching adults, presents own experiences in the area of planning coaching courses. The process of argumentation: The paper draws attention to the growing significance of university graduates’ preparation to professions requiring high degree of soft skills. Activating teaching methods are conductive to developing competences that ensure professional flexibility and adaptability and that help functioning in private life as well. Research results: The article is the preliminary study of the analysed problem. The author continues her studies in the area of the influence of activating methods on the development of soft skills. Conclusions, innovations and recommendations: The training classes described in this paper are planned as optional classes not included in curriculum. It is worth considering the inclusion of selected training classes as optional classes adapted to a particular field of study.
