Summary/Abstract: Research objective: The aim of this study is an analysis of contemporary challenges regarding the development of social competence among students in academic contexts during their university education and the identification of personality recommendations regarding the effectiveness and durability of the development of social competence. The research problem and methods: The study is based on a critical analysis of literature, reports and official government data regarding contemporary needs of the development of social competence and the current state of social competence among university students in Poland. The process of argumentation : The study outlines the risks and drawbacks of instrumental, mechanistic and thus shallow processes of social competence training and presents potential advantages of a process based on personality pedagogy, which places the person in the center as a free and rational individual. Research results: The study proposes a three-stage model of developing social competence in the context of the personality theory, based on discovery, internalization and personal experience of values serving as the basis of social competence. The role of autonomy, self-consciousness and independence is emphasized. Conclusions, innovations and recommendations : The study concludes with a thesis that deep cognitive processes along with internalization of chosen values create a solid basis for the development of social competence, which should be reflected in stable behavior, decision making and beneficiary membership in the society.
