Summary/Abstract: Built at the end of the 19th century on the gentle slopes of Topčider hill, appealing, shaped in the manner of academism, the villa in no. 40 Vase Pelagić Street till this day represents recognizable point of Senjak’s picturesque ambience. Luxurious country house of opulent Belgrade merchant, Đorđe Pavlović, after the First World War the villa serves as a residence of King Peter I Karađorđević. Proclaimed a cultural monument in 1992, the building presently functions as a cultural centre the House of King Peter the First, formally merged with the Children’s cultural centre Majdan. Dignity of His Royal Majesty King Peter the First, who deceased within the villa’s modest interior in the year 1921, as well as architectural values of the edifice constitute the building as a monument of high historical significance. Consequently, it seems more appropriate and, honoring the idea which initially led the authorities to purchase the estate, historically more responsible to merge the villa with more significant institution primarily devoted to protection, interpretation and promotion of cultural heritage. Seen in the light of recent practices of cultural centre it seems that the villa in no. 40 Vase Pelagić Street would rather reach its full potential as a Museum of King Peter the First, at the same time gaining its proper position on the memorial map of Belgrade.
