Summary/Abstract: The Roman army was an important institution of the State. It had services, units, ranks, hierarchy and distinctions. The Latin military linguistic inventory is very rich; thus for services we mention the terms: ordo equester, exercitus, castrum, militiae equestres; for units: legio, cohors, ala, manipulus; for ranks: tribunus, praefectus, centurio, imperator and for distinctions: corona, donativa etc. The Roman army was a professional one deeply involved in the Roman socio-political life, which accounts for the multitude of military linguistic terms existing in Latin.
