Summary/Abstract: The religious and moral state of persons belonging to the Roman-catholic parish in Szadek in the second half of the 18th century was largely defined by their sacramental life. The sacraments that the parishioners received regularly were Baptism, Penance, Eucharist (mainly at Easter), Matrimony and Anointing of the Sick; only some of them received Confirmation, and only three Szadek parishioners received Holy Orders in the 18th century. The worship of God with the participation of the parishioners was mainly practiced on Sundays and Church holidays. Before 1775, the liturgical calendar of Gniezno Archdiocese, to which Szadek parish belonged, contained 40 holidays. The parishioners worshipped The Holy Trinity, the God’s Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The cult of the Blessed Virgin Mary was also very popular, which was demonstrated by celebration of holidays and worship of altars and paintings dedicated to the Mother of God. The Saints who enjoyed special veneration were those who had special celebration days in the liturgical calendar, and altars or paintings in the parish church. Also, numerous special services were held, such as a 40-hour service or prayers for good harvest and delivering from natural disasters. There were some popular practices that were not accepted and fought by the Church, such as public flagellations or leaving food for the dead.
