Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to closely inspect the place, importance and Novica Petkovic’s critical method’s final reach. Taking the author as an inevitable figure in the development of modern critical thought in literature, the paper tends to bring to light those principles and methods which underlie the creative work of the first specialist in semiotics among Serbs. Taking the Petkovic’s attitude that every theoretical claim should be proved by an example, this paper tends to illustrate and confirm every conclusion taken from the critical work of the author, as much as possible, by the statements made by the very critic about his own work. The subject of the particular theoretical analysis is the last author’s book Slavic Bees in Gracanica. This collection of texts gathered through the author’s entire working life, in a compositional but also in an introspective way reflects the three basic attitudes the author insisted upon in his work: relying on the very text, searching for layers of collective memory in language and love towards the subject of his work. With regard to broader cultural context in which it closely inspects literature, the work of Novica Petkovic could be appreciated as an endowment for the posterity, that the only way of cultural ascent is inseparable from the literature of one nation, respect for traditional values and culture.
