Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to toponyms in selected Polish high fantasy series: The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski, Saga o zbóju Twardokęsku by Anna Brzezińska, Kroniki Drugiego Kręgu by Ewa Białołęcka, Księga Całości by Feliks W. Kres, Opowieści piasków by Krzysztof Piskorski and Achaja by Andrzej Ziemiański. The purpose of this paper is to analyze genesis and linguistic structure of toponyms and to describe functions of proper names in high fantasy series: locational (based on space), semantic, allusive, expressive and intertextual. This research proves the connection between toponyms and properties of the high fantasy genre. Toponyms play very important role in high fantasy series: on the one hand, they emphasize how different is the fictional universe, on the other hand, they make this other world more realistic.
