Summary/Abstract: The paper looks at the last moments in the life of Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph, the self-proclaimed “last monarch of the old school,” who passed away one hundred years ago, on 21 November 1916, after a reign of 68 years. The analysis focuses on the emperor’s conservative attitudes and unrealistic perception of an empire that would soon fall apart, before turning to the core of the matter, namely, the perception and the memory of the emperor with his subjects, contemporaries or of the generations that followed, in Austria but especially in Romania.
