Summary/Abstract: In the following we will discuss some aspects of the correspondence between Hans Bergel, a Romanian-Saxon, and Manfred Winkler, born into a Jewish family from Bucovina. Carried on between 1994 and 2010, this epistolary exchange reveals two prominent figures of our literary culture from the Diaspora. Born in the 1920s’ both endured, albeit in different ways, both the devastations of the Second World War and the brutal installation of the Communist regime. As such, they debuted during the unfavourable conditions of the 50’, which hindered them from fully maturing artistically prior to their emigration. Bergel took the path of Germany, while Winkler chose to settle down in Israel. In the volume of their selected correspondence we encounter a fascinating exchange of ideas that tackle literary, political and philosophical themes regarding both their common past and their life in the Diaspora as well the period following 1989, when they re-established direct contacts with Romania. The letters reveal the strong attachment of these two wise man to their native country, where their works have been gradually recovered over the last few decades, with the two now enjoying full recognition.
