Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the ways of adult education in the Romanian modern history. The main forms are: - Schools for adults, with their precious role in the intellectual education of the masses. - Popular evening sittings. The evening sitting is the oldest cultural manifestation which entered, by tradition, in the life of the Romanian village. - Cultural centres. Cultural centres constituted one of the organized forms of mass education initiated by Spiru Haret. - Chat and reading houses. - Popular libraries. - Popular Athenaeums.
