Summary/Abstract: The paper presents genesis and development of fab-labs (fabrication laboratories) – new type of institution of nonformal technical education and training. Fab-Labs, makerspaces or hackerspaces link traditional do-it-yourself (DIY) approach with modern technologies and hackers subculture. The paper discusses costs, problems and possibilities of including that type of initiatives into educational institutions. The paper includes brief summary of educational initiatives connected with DIY.
